Radicalization – Deradicalization Theories and Radicalization in FETO

30.06.2024 | Ömer Faruk ÇELİK

The study aimed to examine theoretical and practical studies on the concepts of radicalization and deradicalization and to examine FETO, the most comprehensive and complex terrorist organization that Turkey has faced, in the light of these theories. In this context, firstly, theoretical studies on radicalization and deradicalization and applications in the field were examined. Then, FETO was evaluated separately in the context of radicalization and deradicalization processes. Although it has different terminology and applications according to its own world view, it has been seen that radicalization theories can be used to explain FETO. However, since deradicalization processes are still at the point of deriving theory from practice and each country applies its own methods, a clear comparison cannot be made. However, it is certain that FETO has not entered a deradicalization process because the leader of the organization has not been captured and all of its secret structures have not been exposed. It has been evaluated that the radical and terrorist structure has turned itself into sleeper cells and is waiting for orders. In this context, it can be said that there is a reorganization process in FETO rather than a deradicalization.
