State-Sponsored Terrorism: Terrorist Organizations in Proxy Wars (PKK/PYD Case)

30.06.2022 | Hakkı Bahadır ÖZTÜRK

Summary

There is a widespread belief that external support is one of the determinants in the PKK and PYD Terrorist Organizations' survival. However, the role of the support in the transformation of organizations has not been studied. Structures that receive support within the scope of proxy wars and state-sponsored terrorism (DST), which are among the methods of hybrid warfare, are expected to undergo a change and go through the process of adapting to the environment. In this context, the aim of the study is to position the use of terrorist organizations in proxy wars beyond sponsorship and to reveal its effect on the transformation of organizations. When the historical stages of the PKK and PYD are examined, it is concluded that the degree of support provided by the states determines the capacities and transformations of the organizations.
